Abdoul Manane Bakary is a Beninese designer who treats fabric as origin rather than ornament. Born in Porto-Novo and based in Cotonou, he works between the two cities, drawing on the inherited rhythms of craft in one and the production energy of a working capital in the other. The result is a practice that carries both registers without insisting on either.

Trained at the Institut Français de la Mode, Sème City, and the International Trade Centre’s Global Textile Academy, Bakary brings a precision to cutting that anchors his label, BAKUS ORAYA. Across the Coton Brut collection, refined through multiple shows, he follows cotton back to its most unmediated state, holding back surface treatment so the cloth can do the speaking. For Bakary, reduction is a position rather than a styling choice: luxury is measured not by distance from the field, but by how close the finished garment is willing to stand to it.
