Màká ná ónyé kwéé, chi ya esòlú ya kweta
(When one agrees, his personal/guiding spirit, is in agreement with him)
This Igbo idiom sits at the heart of Otanjele, an eight-look artistic assemblage shaped by ideas of agency, destiny, and feminine self-possession. It’s a body of work that draws from spiritual philosophy, cultural symbolism, and the intimate rituals of adornment to explore what it means for women to choose themselves—fully, consciously, and without apology.
The idiom speaks to a profound truth: our destinies move in the direction of our decisions. Otanjele leans into that idea, tracing the quiet yet powerful choices women make as they resist imposed smallness and step into their own fullness. The collection looks at femininity not as something defined from the outside but as a force shaped by intention and self-agreement.

The name Otanjele refers to eyeliner—known locally as tiro—a cosmetic item that carries cultural weight in Igbo tradition. Beyond beauty, it functions as a ritual act: a framing of the eyes, believed to be portals to the soul, and a way of equipping oneself with clarity, perception, and protection. The artist builds on this symbolism, drawing a conceptual link between the eyes and doors.
That comparison expands into the world of MgboEzi, the carved Igbo doors historically used at the entrances of homes and shrines of Ozo-titled chiefs. Hewn from slabs of the sacred, termite-resistant oji tree, these doors—standing up to 1.5 meters—were adorned with geometric reliefs and motifs that communicated nobility, protection, and refined taste. In Otanjele, the eyeliner functions in much the same way: a boundary, a shield, a marker of identity and intention.
Through this interplay of eyes and thresholds, the collection proposes that the choices women make—however subtle—are acts of power. Adornment becomes declaration. Ritual becomes direction. And destiny becomes something shaped, not inherited.

Ohlanna bu Zikora, the demi-couture house behind Otanjele, brings this vision to life with a philosophy rooted in access, craftsmanship, and custom fit. The brand offers a couture-level experience with sustainable techniques, refined construction, and made-to-measure precision. Each piece undergoes traditional toile fittings, giving clients full visibility into silhouette and structure. Every look can be modified, reworked, and styled to individual preference—an extension of the collection’s core message: choice is sovereignty.
Otanjele stands as both an artistic inquiry and a wearable manifesto. It honors the women who choose to be—and acknowledges the guiding spirit that rises to meet them when they do.
