Echoes of Pain is a series of portraits about migration and the grief that travels with it. Made in a forest in Switzerland, it places children among the trees, weary and watchful, unsure of the way out, as a picture of the state Mike Kure calls being physically present but emotionally suspended.
Kure began the work after leaving Lagos for the UK in 2020, where the quiet of a new country became its own kind of confinement. Shot largely in dark tones and black and white, the series is less a record than a mirror, held up to Black migrants living between the place they left and the one they have not fully arrived in.
